Retired NFL Players Join Program Designed To Treat Veterans With TBI

A brain injury treatment program originally created to help military veterans with traumatic brain injury is being expanded to include retired professional football players.

The Eisenhower Center’s “After the Impact” program is designed to offer intense treatment for soldiers who have experienced concussions, mild traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other related health issues.

Last week, the center announced the Ann Arbor, Michigan location will also act as the primary facility used by the NFL Players Association to treat retired players who suffer from health problems related to repeated head injuries.

Eisenhower Center John Cornack said, “We decided that the NFL and the veterans would benefit from getting to know each other and to understand that, you know, you’re future is ahead of you and you need to work on this together.”

The NFL Players Association estimates 6,000 former players, about 28-percent of current retirees, will eventually have Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia believed to be associated with a history of brain trauma.
