The Impact of Sequestration and TBI Research

In his op-ed article, Arthur S. Levine, M.D., who is senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, states that one of the most pernicious health problems facing this country is traumatic brain injury (TBI).  There are multiple projects providing answers for athletes with sports concussions and veterans struggling with blast injuries.  What many Americans don’t realize is that the recent sequestration imposes an 8.2% across-the-board reduction for the 7 months remaining in fiscal 2013 for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Most people are also not aware that about 80% of all funding for medical research in American universities comes from the NIH.  With more veterans returning home with TBIs and more reported cases of sports-related concussions, it seems to be the wrong time to cut TBI research.
