Schumacher moves to rehab: The long road back
Michael Schumacher, the Formula 1 champion, has emerged from his long coma and moved into a rehabilitation center at University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland. Mr. Schumacher sustained a severe brain injury from a fall in a skiing accident and has been in a medically sustained coma. During his hospitalization in Grenoble, France there has been much speculation about his status and rumors that he would never recover. Mr. Schumacher’s recovery is likely to be a long and slow process given the severity of his injuries and his prolonged level of low consciousness. While the clinical course of his recovery-to-date remains confidential, we can reasonably speculate that he is facing a process of relearning basic functions and adjusting to the more permanent aspects of his brain injury through his program of rehabilitation at University Hospital. It is important to keep in mind that the outcomes of brain injury relate to an individual’s pre-injury strengths and psychological characteristics. Here we may see the attributes which made him a champion driver emerge to boost his recovery.
We all wish Mr. Schumacher the best in what has been and will be a long road back.
