On the Road Again: Our Fall Conference Schedule

The start of the 2016 fall conference season will take staff members from the Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute at Brookhaven Hospital throughout the United States and into Canada.

Dr. Rolf B. Gainer will present “Loss of Self: The Task of Building a New Identity,” at the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Thursday, September 22nd. This presentation will raise awareness about the treatment of individuals with brain injury in hospital settings.

At the 22nd Annual National Zarrow Mental Health Symposium, “Ready for Zero: Innovative and Sustainable Solutions for Housing & Recovery,” Dr. Rolf B. Gainer will present, “Detours, Road Closings and Potholes-The Triple Whammy of Brain Injury .” This presentation will address the connection between brain injury, mental illness and homelessness. The Zarrow Symposium will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma from September 28th -30th.

We will have Kristi Whitaker, LMSW, CBIS, at our exhibit booth at the Southwest Conference on Disability, October 5th-7th, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Rolf B. Gainer will present, “Loss of Self Following Brain Injury: The Task of Building a New Identity,” and Ron Broughton, LPC, CBIST, will present, “Autonomy, Capacity, Beneficence and Outcomes: What TBI Rehabilitation is Really Like.” We look forward to this large multi-disability conference every year. There is always a great sense of community there as well as an enjoyable art show.

Kristi will also be returning to the Brain Injury Association of Missouri 12th Annual Statewide Conference, in St. Charles, Missouri, on October 13th-15th. She is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting new people as well. We are also interested in one of the keynote speakers, Dr. Mervin Langley, who is a friend to NRI and will present, “Substance Abuse and Brain Injury: Strategies that work despite cognitive and behavioral impairment.”

Jason Pirtle will be exhibiting at the Washington Medical Case Management Association’s (WMCMA) fall conference in Lynnwood, Washington, on October 13th. This year’s theme is, “Empowering Patients with Chronic Disease.”

For the first time, the International Symposium of Lifecare Planners (ISLCP) is joining with the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP) to hold a joint conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 20th-22nd. Dr. Rolf B. Gainer will be presenting, “Loss of Identity after Brain Injury: Understanding Success in Recovery.” Nancy Weber, CBIS, will be at our exhibit table, so be sure to come by and say, “hello.”

We are excited to have a table at the Brain Injury Alliance of Washington’s (BIA of WA) annual Brain Injury Gala (B.I.G.) on October 29th in Seattle, Washington. Our Brain Injury Case Manager, Nancy Weber, will be at this event to support the BIA of Washington and its important work in providing education, assistance and advocacy for those affected by brain injury.

Dr. Rolf B. Gainer has been invited to deliver a keynote presentation on “Aging and Brain Injury: Expectations and Realities,” at the Annual Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado Conference: Brain Injury Across the Lifespan, in Denver, Colorado, on November 3rd-4th.

November 10th & 11th will take Dr. Gainer to Toronto, Canada, for ABI Network’s conference. Attendees will learn a great deal about individuals living with brain injury along with a psychiatric diagnosis in Dr. Gainer’s presentation, ”Life with a brain injury and a dual diagnosis: Barriers to outcome.”
