Concussions, the blood-brain barrier and auto-immune disease

Do multiple concussions trigger an auto-immune reaction? Research involving football players in a study through the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic points to a link between concussions and auto-immune reactions which may account for development of tau deposits associated with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The study will lead to advancement in detecting changes in the brain of individuals who have experienced multiple concussions and hopefully will become a tool to be used in the emergency room, the sports arena and the battlefield. We have seen too many great athletes like Dave Dursen and Junior Seau whose lives have been so negatively impacted by brain injury caused by multiple concussions.

Research is advancing rapidly in improving the detection of concussive injuries and in our understanding of the mislabeled “mild” brain injuries. Click here to read a summary of the study:
