The brain’s capacity to regenerate

Cerebral_lobesProfessor Richard Faull delivered a TEDxAuckland talk on his research in neurogenesis which address the issues related to the brain’s ability to generate new cell growth. For years science has regarded the brain has an organ which was unable to generate new cells. Dr. Faull, in this great talk, spoke of the stem cells around the ventricles and the migration of these cells towards the front of the brain. Based on his research into Huntington’s Disease, Dr. Faull discusses the movement of these new brain cells along what he called a “motorway”. His research which has been published in Science points to the specific mechanisms of neurogenesis and of cell movement. As he suggested towards the close of this TED talk: “use it or lose it”.
