Caregivers as Clients: Who’s Caring for the Caregiver?

Caregiver coupleSevere brain injury doesn’t just impact the victim.  The people who love and care for the survivors are just as devastated, but their needs are often overlooked.  From the moment they receive that dreaded call, caregivers are asked to put aside their feelings and future to tend to the survivor.  Unfortunately, there are long-term consequences to being a caregiver – both negative and positive.  With the right support, information and validation caregivers can not only care for the survivor but also for themselves, and find satisfaction they never expected.

Many who are in the role of caregiver, either personally or professionally, experience compassion fatigue.  Finding a balance between self-care and caring for others is challenging.  Brookhaven’s June 4th Seminar will allow the opportunity for people in caregiving roles to learn how to address these challenges.  We will be discussing how professionals, families and communities can help caregivers understand and accept their feelings about what it means to be a caregiver.  We will examine the roles, responsibilities and risks of caring for the severely brain injured survivor while recognizing the opportunities for enriching the relationships between the caregiver and their loved one.
