Nevada enacts brain health program for licensed fighters

tumblr_n4urat2B951rog5d1o1_500Nevada Athletic Commission is enacting legislation requiring all licensed fighters to undergo routine testing to assess their brain health. This program is unique in its requirements and can serve as a model for monitoring brain health in other sports, such as football where multiple concussions can lead to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or CTE. The Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health at the Cleveland Clinic will test athletes using an iPad C3 application which incorporates balance and mental acuity testing. Currently there are 650 participants in the study including 50 women. Lynn Alvarez, a nurse and registered mixed martial arts fighter, looks at the testing as a way of preventing cumulative, life changing injury.
