Inhalant Abuse and TBI

The increase of inhalant abuse in the U.S. is giving rise to neurological damage. Even children as young as eight report that they have sniffed gasoline, lighter fluid, paint thinner, and other solvents. Inhalants are everywhere in our lives and include common household goods and office supplies.

As drug abuse drops due to law enforcement and improved drug education, inhalant abuse may be increasing due to a lack of information being made available to the public regarding this form of substance abuse. Consider the following statistics reported on CNN:

“About 2.6 million 12- to 17-year-olds have used inhalants in the past, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated, based on a 2002 questionnaire answered by more than 23,000 youths. Two years earlier, the numbers were half a million less.”
