Getting to “the New Normal”
Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ traumatic brain injury has heightened the American public’s awareness of the survival and recovery process. At each step of her recovery we have been exposed to the question of “what outcome is attainable?” and “when will the process of recovery stop?”. For those of us who work in the field of brain injury rehabilitation we have come to grips with the idea that recovery from a brain injury involves embracing a new understanding of “normal” and that the process of recovery continues way beyond the end of rehabilitation and may continue throughout the person’s life.
The process of acute medical rehabilitation, such as Representative Giffords is experiencing at TIRR in Houston is highly complex and involves helping her regain lost functions. Dr. Sanjay Gupta visited TIRR and participated in a day-long rehabilitation program similar to the types of activities in Representative Giffords’ program. The short video provides a first hand look at brain injury rehabilitation which is important to understanding the process of recovery and relearning.
