Repeated Head Trauma Is The Cause Of Newly Discovered Disease
Traumatic brain injury has become a major discussion over the past few years, as high profile deaths or injuries in the NFL and NHL have brought the topic to mainstream attention. Now, researchers are saying the condition causing issues later in life for these athletes may not be TBI, but a condition caused by repeated head trauma.
The condition is known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), and the current data suggests CTE can affect youth and adults alike.
“CTE can start months or years after brain trauma has occurred, either in contact sports, military service, or perhaps even partner violence,” Admiral Regina Benjamin, the U.S. surgeon general, told scientists gathered at the first ever conference to discuss CTE at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. The conference was covered by Claims Journal.
While they have been able to identify CTE, researchers are still working hard to track the early signs of the disease, as well as its typical progression. We all know repeated head injuries are dangerous, but now more than ever it seems important to protect your brain.
