It’s Not Just the Boys: Sports Concussions

The topic of concussions in young athletes has been in the headlines lately, much of which has focused on preventing and recognizing the signs of concussion.  Because concussions are so common in football, a predominately male sport, the news of concussion risks to female athletes has been more limited.  The American Academy of Neurology recently published an update to their Evaluation and Management of Concussion in Sports and they found that female athletes are at most risk playing soccer.  The number of females participating in soccer has steadily increased according to the US Youth Soccer organization.  In order to reduce the risk of recurrent and long-term effects of concussion, it is recommended that school-based professionals and the athletes – girls and boys – be educated by a licensed health care professional who is knowledgeable in sports concussions.
