Doctors waking Schumacher from coma
Physicians in Grenoble, France are working to lighten Michael Schumacher from his medically induced coma. Schumacher received a severe brain injury in fall while skiing several weeks ago and his condition has been subject to much speculation. Emergency surgery to remove blood clots on his brain and reduce intra-cranial pressure took place at the hospital immediately following his injury and doctors have used medications to keep Mr. Schumacher in a coma during a critical phase of his recovery. Stories about his situation have been rampant with diverse predictions of outcome. It is important to understand that recovery from a severe brain injury is a complex process which is not always linear. Schumacher’s physicians are seeing positive responses as they lighten his coma by reducing the medications. For Mr. Schumacher, there is a long road ahead much as we observed with Representative Gabrielle Giffords in her recovery from a gunshot injury to her brain. Mr. Schumacher has the support of an amazing wife and family and the skills of excellent physicians. We don’t know if he will return to auto racing, but we need to celebrate each step of his recovery in this long process. Like other people who have a severe brain injury, there is a New Normal which is yet to be defined.
