Is a New Type of Cell Responsible for the Link Between TBI and Epilepsy?
The connection between epilepsy and traumatic brain injury has been strongly verified, but researchers have yet to discover what the cause of the link is. It is believed that damage to the brain’s protective covering known as the blood-brain barrier could be play a significant role in triggering epilepsy following a brain injury, but a new study suggests increased levels of a specific neurostransmitter could also be a contributing factor.
The study was published in Cerebral Cortex, but you can find all the pertinent details in the press release sent out this morning, which can be read here.
