White House Announces Concussion Summit
Over the past few years, the issue of brain injuries in sports of all levels has gone from a little-talked about health concern into one of the biggest health issues of our time. The topic underscores every conversation about professional sports and safety, and it has become a major concern for a quickly growing number of parents considering letting their children join more high-risk contact sports such as football or hockey.
The issue has become such a large public concern that the President of the United States has even offered his opinion in both formal and informal settings, including saying he would not let his son play football, if he had one.
Now, President Obama has announced he will host the White House Healthy Kids and Safe Sports Concussion Summit, which will include young athletes, military service members, and medical experts.
“The president will announce new commitments by both the public and private sectors to raise awareness about how to identify treat and prevent concussions, and conduct additional research in the field of sports-related concussions that will help us better address these problems,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
USA Today reports the spokesman said Obama “appreciates the role that sports plays in the lives of young people, and his administration is committed to helping ensure that children continue to be active and play sports safely.”
