Seahawks Wide Receiver Sidney Rice Retires Amid Concussion Concerns

sidney-rice-1

This morning, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 27, after seven seasons in the league. Many sourced are indicating the decision was strongly influenced by concerns about the long-term risks of brain injuries.

Rice is no stranger to injuries, but it is noteworthy that concussions seem to be at the center of Rice’s retirement decision. Last year, Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Russell Allen was forced into retirement after suffering a concussion and related mild stroke, which follows the typical pattern for concussion related retirements in sports.

Rice’s decision to retire while still healthy suggests that players within the league are becoming increasingly aware of the long-term risks associated with repeat brain injuries. You can find more information about Sidney Rice’s career and retirement decision here.
