Neuropathologist Played By Will Smith In Upcoming Film Talks “Concussion”
Few movie trailers have sparked as much discussion this year as the preview for the upcoming film Concussion starring Will Smith. In the film, Smith will portray Dr. Bennet Omalu, a neuropathologist who first discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy in the brains of deceased professional football players and the NFL’s attempts to stifle his findings.
Dr. Omalu’s findings are the spark that led to the huge increase in concern about brain injuries in athletics, but it has not always been an easy task to expose the risk of long-term brain damage from repeated concussions in sports.
Medscape recently interviewed Dr. Omalu at the College of American Pathologists 2015 Meeting. The interview explores how Dr. Omalu’s findings have impacted sports today and the journey that has led him a quiet coroner’s office on a dark Saturday night to seeing his life portrayed by one of the most famous actors in Hollywood.
