FDA Approves Testing to Assist in Brain Injury Determination
The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) test was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) under their guidelines as a “device.” This test is intended to be utilized as part of a larger medical evaluation to diagnose brain injury or concussion. It’s hard to believe that football season is once again upon us. With the beginning of a new school year kids will be participating in other kinds of activities as well which makes the FDA’s approval of this device especially timely.
I have a friend with a 7 year old who will have his first football game this Saturday. Despite the frequency with which I provide “helpful” information about children and concussion, she continues to allow her son to play the sport that he adores. At least we are getting better at diagnosis with tests such as ImPACT. Early diagnosis and prevention efforts are the next best thing to avoiding the sport altogether.
