Keep Your Brain Safe This Winter
The Christmas season is a wonderful time of year where we get to spend time with those we care about, and many of us get a short vacation from work. Unfortunately, there is also a spike in brain injuries and concussions this time of year, as we indulge in leisurely activities.
Especially with weather as mild as it has been in Tulsa this year, there are undoubtably many taking advantage of the delayed cold to skateboard, bicycle, go camping, and do all sorts of fun physical activities, but it is very important to take the necessary precautions to protect your body and brain.
As Dr. Sam Ashoo, MD, Medical Director of Bixler Emergency Center in Tenessee puts it, “it is very easy to forgo the helmet because of convenience or fashion. However, the consequences can be tragic.”
Dr. Ashoo said this in his yearly warning to be careful during the holiday season, and he offers some solid tips for staying safe, though there is one that sticks out most notably to me. Convincing children to wear a helmet can be a chore, especially if they have become convinced (as all kids do at some point) that wearing a helmet is uncool. But by using stickers, and art supplies to let your kids personalize their helmets, they become invested in them and have a reason to want to show it off to their friends.
There are plenty of ways to have fun this season without getting hurt, no matter your age. A little bit of effort will keep you and your family protected from easily preventable brain injuries.
