You are Still At a Risk for TBI During Winter

The weather is finally getting colder, and fall is starting to kick in. You would think this means a welcome fall in the numbers of people visiting trauma centers, but actually there isn’t that much of a decrease in traumatic brain injuries in winter.

Every year, roughly 1.7 million people suffer a TBI, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. These 1.7 million people make up nearly one-third of injury related deaths in the United States, and those that don’t lead to death can cause permanent disability.

People also tend to think the majority of traumatic brain injuries occur in summer when everyone is out and active. This assumes most cases of TBI come from innocent athletic activities or things of that sort. In fact, most occur from falling or vehicular crashes, which are a heightened risk during the winter months.

Take the appropriate precautions for the harsh winter months, and sheets of ice you may find in your path. John Bleicher has some great safety tips in the Missoulian for protecting your head during the winter months.
