Is a GoPro Camera Responsible For Michael Schumacher’s Severe Brain Injuries?

The severe brain injury of Michael Schumacher was both tragic and shocking, but a new report on the Formula 1 driver’s accident could have implications for the entire sports industry – especially extreme sports.
GoPro cameras have become hugely popular among skiers, cyclists, and other extreme sports lovers for the easy ability to mount the camera to helmets and record stable, high quality footage while in action. But recent statements suggest the cameras may also prevent a major risk.
F1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet, who has been in contact with Schumacher’s family since the accident, suggests the camera may be responsible for the severity of the driver’s injuries. According to the statements on a French radio station, investigators believe the camera may have weekend Schumacher’s helmet, causing it to shatter upon impact. This is supported by research published by the Telegraph:
“The helmet completely broke. It was in at least two parts. ENSA analysed the piece of the helmet to check the material, and all was OK,” said a source close to the investigation.
“But why did it explode on impact? Here the camera comes into question. The laboratory has been testing to see if the camera weakened the structure.”
Schumacher is still recovering from the severe injury which resulted in the driver spending six months in a medically-induced coma and may be disabled for the rest of his life.
