What Do We Actually Know About Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy?
A few years ago chronic traumatic encephalopathy and traumatic brain injury were just medical jargon the average person was unlikely to encounter, let alone understand. Since then, things have changed drastically. TBI is a common topic in sports and headlines, and CTE has been diagnosed in almost 100 former football players.
Unfortunately one thing hasn’t changed. We still don’t actually know all that much about chronic traumatic encephalopathy. While we can be reasonably confident repeated head trauma triggers the development of CTE, there is very little other concrete information available.
Jesse Fredeen, writer for Vice Sports, recently explored the murky understanding of chronic traumatic encephalopathy to bring the facts to light and show how CTE is affecting athletes around the world.
